This language course focuses on the development of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the language. It assumes that the students have minimal or no prior knowledge of the language and culture. The major means of communication between students and instructors will be in the target language. By the end of Grade 8, students should exhibit Novice-High level proficiency in speaking, writing, listening, and reading (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, 1999).
8th Grade- ASL 64.00900 The eighth grade course teaches basic signs and hand parameters in American Sign Language (ASL). Practices visual comprehension, signing, and basic expressive and receptive skills. Uses interactive activities to teach the cultural aspects of ASL and the deaf culture.
High School GA Course Number Description
ASL I 64.03100 Introduction to basic knowledge about sign communication and deafness. Emphasis is placed upon acquisition of comprehension and production skills, knowledge of the Deaf community, and the development of cultural awareness.
ASL II 64.03200 Enhances Level I American Sign Language (ASL) skills and continues to develop receptive and expressive signing skills. Components include the study of communication, Deaf culture, connections with other disciplines, comparisons with the student’s first language, and potential for involvement in the Deaf community.
Spanish I 60.07100 Introduces the Spanish language; emphasizes all skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an integrated way. Includes how to greet and take leave of someone, to ask and respond to basic questions, to speak and read within a range of carefully selected topics and to develop an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Spanish II 60.07200 Enhances Level One skills in Spanish and provides opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an integrated way. Provides continued practice in how to greet and take leave of someone, to ask and respond to basic questions, to speak and read within a range of carefully selected topics and to increase understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
